Make Dividing Fractions Easy for your students with these!

Many students stress out when they see fractions. This is why it is extremely important for teachers and homeschooling guardians to ensure that your students are confident and master the skills when dividing fractions.

PREREQUISITES:

Before teaching "division of fractions", make sure your students have mastered how to multiply fractions because when students divide fractions, they will be turning the problem into a "multiplication of fractions" problem(with some more steps).

Students also need to know how to convert mixed numbers into improper fractions because before starting the division, they will need to make sure the mixed numbers are converted.

How to convert improper fractions back into mixed numbers is important to know so that when the answer is an improper fraction, they will know how to convert to a mixed number.

Students also need to know how to write a whole number as a fraction. Otherwise, students get confused about whether the whole number is a numerator or denominator. Therefore, ensuring that students know to rewrite a whole number as a fraction with 1 as the denominator is important.

POSSIBLE WAYS TO BREAK UP THE DIVIDING FRACTIONS LESSON:

My students were missing a lot of basic skills because of the covid pandemic, so I took a few days to teach "division of fractions". But, you know your students best, so depending on the level of your students, you may want to do it all in 1 or 2 days.

I made sure to teach lessons on converting from mixed numbers to improper fractions, improper fractions to mixed numbers, and rewriting whole numbers as a fraction. Then, I taught multiplication of fractions.

Last, I taught how to divide fractions using KCR. But, usually I would break up the problems and start out with only improper fractions in the examples and gradually work to more challenging problems where students have to first convert the mixed numbers into improper fractions before dividing.

CONCLUSION:

Most importantly, you need to provide supports for your students to be successful and confident in this math skill. Your students need these resources. Check out the previews on teachers pay teachers.

Then, you can subscribe to my youtube channel SimpleVisualMath to see how to use the visuals and resources in your math class. New videos will be uploaded every week which you can play in your class for the mini lesson or for students to play at home for homework help.

Below is a preview of the "Dividing Fractions Using KCR" resources.
